  1. either way works, with a tech focus you just wind up with more meat left on the chrome, but a good shot of carb cleaner should sort that right out ;)

  2. I'd lean towards a city based game as well. I'm partial to lower level fixers and prowlers these days, so I'll probably end up going that route.

a doctor and a fixer... if we picked up a decent solo, we could go big game hunting for that chrome colored gold... assuming we wanted to go super dark and murder people for parts ;)

  3. according to the seller it was not uncommon for the new polish AKM's to end up with the old style "nut" type devices that were standard on the model 47 (blessed be saint Kalashnikov and all of his progeny). but not to worry! because our laws are written by abject fools, i have to swap several parts in order for this gun to be "MERICAN" and one of them will be the muzzle device which is getting swapped for a tapco slant break.

also, good news everyone! found a local guy to rivet my parts into a gun this Monday, which is presidents day. it's the perfect arm for militia service, so I'm sure George Washington would approve!

  4. Yep, it's a 70's Era polish AKM parts kit. I had a nodak spud receiver in the safe already and it seemed like the time to build it. Of course it won't be 100% polish, the barrel was us produced, and I'm slipping in an ALG trigger unit for 922r compliance (and the reported 3lb trigger pull as opposed to 10 on the saiga). But at least your polish brethren took good care of it, the stock isn't all carved up like the Yugoslavs did to my SKS, nor does it have the gouges and dings of apparently being used as a hammer on a regular basis ;)

Now I just need someone to help me rivit it all together. .. wonder if markc knows of a guy in the oc?

  5. damn those things are fugly and super obvious. come on drug cartels, aren't you guys suppose to be making billions on this black market? shell out a few hundred k for an armored Mercedes, have a little class B)

but in all seriousness, those "tanks" remind me more than a little of ww2 era half tracks, scout cars and APC's fielded by both sides in the conflict. so it seems all is lost, the drug cartels have acquired 1940's levels of mechanized warfare. when they take it out of the garage and it goes rumbling down the street, everybody is going to know about it. so get someone with a cell phone to call in the grid and drop some mortar rounds on the fucker. or have the cops rig an RC car with a shaped charge munition in it's belly then park it under the beast... like ze Germans did back in the day ;)

also on a personal note i wanted to thank the senior officer and his countrymen over in Radom for sending this gift my way :D

  6. To be fair, pbp games in general have a 70% failure rate in the first few months... or at least they do according to my limited sample size.

  7. that is one nice thing about running 5E, the only stuff that's "legal" is what's in the core book. there are alt builds and races sprinkled about in books and encounters materials, and all of them explicitly require GM approval... as opposed to the old D&D model of everything that snuck it's way past the editor and into a dragon mag is presumed "legal" and the DM is a bastard for not letting you have it ;)

  8. I've "checked out" 5th edition as a player... and then the head of our meetup group snookered me into running encounters in 5E for a bit. seemed much more streamlined than 4E, i didn't need a computer database to build a damn character for 5E. The hardest part for me as a DM was not party wiping noobs! 1st level characters are made of tissue paper in 5E... sort of like another game system i was fond of back in the day ;) hell remember the first session i ran i dropped 3 of the 4 players using a trio of kobolds armed with slings. not magic slings, not tactical "assault" slings, just plain old D4 damage David and Goliath slings.

that said as a player we got auto leveled to 8 when we changed editions, and my my cleric of the sun god was calling down the holy napalm of justice round after round... while also tanking like a boss because someone at wizards was nice enough to post you could do your finger wiggling with the hand attached to your shield arm. so yeah, cool edition assuming you live long enough to enjoy it. but for every adventurer that lives long enough for fame and glory there's three more who got gunned down in a back alley with polymer one shots B)

  9. And low, an angel of the lord appeared to Maxim in Vienna who said unto him "Hang your chemistry and electricity! If you want to make a pile of money, invent something that will enable these Europeans to cut each others' throats with greater facility." and the lord Browning saw this, and it was good :D

  10. yep i'm ok, San Bernadino is at least 45min to an hour from me... and to be honest in an hour i could drive to parts of LA that would be MUCH more hazardous to my health on a daily basis. Thanks for checking in though :)

But yes, at this point it's fairly clear this was terrorism and not workplace violence as Obama initially told us (anybody else getting deja vu? just me?). To the great consternation to gun grabbers everywhere, A+ rated California's gun control scheme failed to cause the perps more than a minor annoyance... so the solution is to just export those laws nation wide obviously.

But everybody just be sure to remember, we can't judge billions of Muslims based on the actions countless terrorists world wide (and also the human rights record of every every majority muslim nation on the planet). However, it's perfectly fine to treat the 100+ million American gun owners as potential criminals that need to be put on a list and have their rights restricted because it makes people FEEL safer. Maybe if i start worshiping John Moses Browning and Gaston Glock as a prophets of the one true god, liberals would back off so as not to infringe on my culture or beliefs? (we've even got the whole shia/sunni fude going on already, read any gun forum)

  11.

nice irons yall got there B)

you know, the funniest thing happened. you see i used to have 2 handguns, 9mm glock 34 and 45 caliber sig 220 (german). 2 hands, 2 hand guns, that's all i needed. but some sort of cellular division seems to have taken place since i started shooting IDPA, because now there's 5 of them in my safe (3 in the last 6 months). http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd82/er...zpssjt5dyl2.jpg

doing fairly well, middle of the pack my first 3 outings (51st, 49th and 43rd overall out of a pack that tops 80 shooters consistently. damn procedurals are keeping me down). i also finally got the lead out of my ass and took a 2 day handgun course with FTA before starting... mainly because i wanted to avoid accidentally putting any lead into my ass on the draw ;)

  12. You might consider posting over on the 2077 boards as well. It gets more traffic than our cozy little board. Plus every month or so there's a post asking if anyone knows a place they can play.

As for me... my dance card is full ATM. I got talked into running D&D encounters by our group organizer, plus I'm about to jump into a shadowrun 5E game for monday nights... shocking I know, me passing on a PBP game, probably a sign of the imminent apocalypse. Anyways, good luck to you and good to see you back.

  13. nationwide the numbers range from 33k on the low end to 90k+, with the median just shy of 57k.

surprisingly LAPD starts at the national average, salary wise... also, it's a little unnerving they have a huge asses banner adds with the starting salary on it. http://www.joinlapd.com/salary.html#

of particular note for your chart will be this bit atta:

Upon entering the academy, the starting base salary for Police Officer I shall be $57,420. The officer will earn this rate until graduation from the Police Academy.

Upon completion of the academy and assignment to the field as a probationary Police Officer I, the officer shall be paid $60,552.

Upon completion of probation and advancement to the rank and pay grade of Police Officer II, an officer with NO college degree, military experience or prior law enforcement experience shall be paid $64,916.

Upon completion of probation and advancement to the rank and pay grade of Police Officer II, an officer WITH a college degree (AA or higher) OR at least two years of military or prior law enforcement experience shall be paid $67,442.

Subsequent salary movement for a Police Officer II shall occur after one year of aggregate service to the next higher step in the range for Police Officer II.

    http://per.lacity.org/psb/lapd_salary.htm

so after the academy a 3k bump, after your year of probation another sizable bump, then annual bumps thereafter. assuming night city follows suit, their pay chart might also be front-loaded like LAPD (supposed to help with retention).

  14. nation wide you're correct, but i was limiting my comments to California because A. that's the area i know and B. he's planning to run in night city which is in California... sorta.

in California it's rare to find anyone working directly for any branch of statewide or local government that isn't union, and that tends to be the case for cops as well. pay wise... well the feds say a mean wage of $87k in CA, state agency claims just over $88k. not to shabby... if you discount the higher than average rates of on the job injury/death, suicide, divorce, and stress than contributes to a lower than average life expectancy post retirement.

  15. well i don't know about "by the book" prices, but i do know that those cops were buying out in corona/norco/fontana/etc because they could get a decent sized track home for roughly half what it would cost them in the city proper. in terms of numbers, well the house down the street from us is listing for 680k, and even in some of the more ghetto areas of the county you won't find many houses going for less than 400k. out in the sprawl though, track homes are going for 2-3 hundred thousand. so their housing cost is halved, but their transportation expenses go up a good bit.

  16. 3/12 would mean pulling 3 12 hour shifts per week, plus an extra "payback" day each month to even things up. 4/10 is the same principle, 4 10 hour shifts per week and no need for a payback day since they're getting their 40 hour work week in. not sure how relevant it is, but i know cops "lateraled" (moved from one department to another) over to Anaheim in droves when LAPD stopped letting them work 3/12 schedules. also, i remember asking someone why the back lot had so many RV's in it. turns out several of the cops would crank out their 3 12 hour shifts in the space of 2-3 days, then hop on the freeway/amtrack and truck out 50+ miles to their house in the suburbs. who wouldn't love a 3 day work week?

  17. Depends in part on what their regular shift is. I know in this area street cops tend to pull a 3/12 or a 4/10 shift. So if they pull overtime after their regular shift chances are they'll sail past time and a half and go straight into "golden time" which is 2x base pay for each hour over 12 in a 24 hour period (this might be a California specific thing). I also know cops near retirement will choose a year to "spike" and take all the overtime they can since calpers retirement is based on your highest years earnings. I know some Anaheim cops whose base pay was ~$48k but with extra duty overtime (parking control at stadiums, school events and patrolling the tragic Kingdom) were clearing over $100k.
