    Illegal Immigrants:
Exactly as the words say. A person or persons who emmigrate in violations of a country's laws.
I have a good mate who's English, but cannot emmigrate to Oz because he has a heart condition and may in the future rely on our health system to the detriment of our country. I'm not happy about it, and I'm even less happy when I see people come from halfway across the globe to sneak across the border on the last leg in a leaky boat (the 'children overboard' fiasco always seems to ignore that the ship was scuttled by the inhabitants for some strange reason). Why are people 'who fear for their lives at home' so strident about their access to one particular country when it's the tenth one they've landed in? It couldn't be because of economics, could it? Perhaps I'm too cynical, but it seems my mate who abides by the law is being hard done by.

you're right, that is unfair, but what can you do?

What I'm pointing out is that you have to be careful of the way that the illegal immigration issue is being used as the acceptable face of racism.

But if there not calling it racist there calling it in-humane (sp?).  So does that mean solitary confinement prisions and prisons in general should be disbanded?

Personally i see it as legally justified.

  2. To be quite honest, i couldnt give a rats about the new space race.  :p  I mean what will mr and mrs average get out of it? more people listening via spy satellites on there converstaions? Its just a group of countries banding together to show america, if they can palnt nukes and spy bases on the moon, then so can they. Thats how i see it. Besides it being a huge waste of money. Whats wrong with throwing half of the proposed $$$$ into public hospitals or something worth while. But sure covert ops are going to love the boom in technology, as well as millitary spin offs from new tech thats made.

OOH wait, i almost forgot. One good thing will come out of this. They will be finally able to prove or shoot down in flames the apollo moon landings were fake conspiracy.  :D

I may well be part of those would be subject to your policy Mr Harry. I'm unemployed, and have thus far been able to obtain a decent job of even temporary nature.

    The Voice of Annoyance.

Thats the crux of it right there. Your looking for a job. From what ive seen some of the people in question only look for work because they have to, or else no more social security. As for being the voice of Annoyance, you could also just be unlucky in the work place.

  4. Ben takes in all the commings and goings of the past few hours.

"Richard, whats your status? do you require any assistance?" ben enquires into the intercom.

"Kea this is Ben, im ready when you guys are. Ill open the doors on your word. Good luck and good hunting" Ben looks at the intercom then focus' his attention at the tasks at hand.

I barely tolerate the thinly veiled racism over on the Immigrant-fingerprinting thread, but this gets my goat up like you wouldn't believe.

    Careful, people.

Thats cold dude. I pay taxes, im entitled (as far as i know) to a right to voice my views. And i think there is a line between racism and what we have posted.

I mean you dont read anything about nailing chinese to crosses or burning indians because there indian.

And i realise that everyone is different, not all have had a good upbringing or child/adult hood and thats fair enough.

But everyone is entiltled to an opinion.  And for what its worth. I agree with Bookwyrm. Things should be brought out in the open. Sure Bookwyrm and i dont see level on the whole issue, but i respect his views on it, as i hope he respects mine.

Remember, there can be no change with out communication.

I was just pointing out that you weren't the first culture there, is all. :D

She has a point, though.  Most rural areas are unlikely to provide the language tuition they need, whilst at the same time isolating them from help from their own communities.  Besides, I don't think most oppressive regimes are likely to provide English tuition to the people they're oppressing just in case they want to leave.

That's probably because the telephone services were farmed out to India to save money, it happens a lot over here as well.  Besides, you'll find most second generation immigrants speak English very well.

I got your point booky and good call.

Thing is, its a bit hard on everyone if they cant speak english when they move out. But i do know of a family who enrolled in english the moment they landed in oz and with in a year had it nailed. What gets on my goat (the one with the titanium spine) is the fact that they "wont/dont" enroll to learn english, assuming they shouldnt have to speak english. Now if i moved to china, i would have no chance of getting the populas to speak english. Hence why i would learn before i left.  But i realise that some people just want out of there hell hole asap.

Now with the phone mobs. The call centers are in sydney and melbourne. Only problem is the companys dont want to shell out the dollars to get there english up to a high to very high standard. Now put yourself in my boots. Ya just gotten home from 12.5 hrs of hard, hot work, and have to speak to someone who cant do their job effeciently because they cant master the lingo. Makes me want to scream and shout. But, what can you do.

i know for a FACT that up kakadu way here in Aus there is about 10 000 years worth of uranium to be mined

How very true, and a slight fact about aussie uranium.

    Its safe.

Because its packaged with a  :)  on it. So that makes it safe to cart into space. Seen it on tv. (well a comedy show) so its gotta be true.  :p

  8. Well i feel that play by chat, has advantages, its instant, things move quicker but you often have to adlib more and end up playing by the seat of ya pants.

Play by post is good, you get thinking time. Some times miles too much if everyone else is busy sorting out life, the universe and everything else and doesnt get time to post.

Play by email is good as it can be more flexable in some respects. Ie no computer at work, but have a pop3 compatible phone.  :)

It is a valid point about the dole, but you need to extend it to include all the people who were born in Australia who sponge, and who's only contribution to Aussie culture is to complain about the bloody abo's.

Besides, unless you're an aborigine you can't really take the moral high ground in objecting to people trying to change your culture. :p

    Fair call.

But there is more to aussie culture than just abo's, like poms drinking warm beer,  but thats another cultural lesson/rant for another time.

An interesting article in the paper by some little asian chick. Saying that new proposed imigration laws mean that people have to go to rural areas. And she had the hide to say.

    Quote
This makes it much harder for those that cannot speak english
WELL HELLO! CANT SPEAK THE LINGO TO A GOOD STANDARD, GO BACK TO WHERE YE CAME FROM.

Now before ya all jump down me throat, allow me to explain.

Ever tried ringing your bank's phone banking service and gone throught the buisness to speak to an operator? Well over here you seem to get some aisian or indian person who can master a few words of english, then doesnt understand what your having trouble with, gets confused because of the accent/language problem (maily the lingo prob, accent is a minor issue). Then leaves you forced to stand in an endless que at a bank waiting to get served only to be told. "you could have fixed this up over the phone"

If there ability to speak english was better it would be no worries.

Yeah, feel free to ask dumb and not so dumb questions.

Some of us enjoy showing off...

    Welcome aboard.

The only dumb question is the question that wasnt asked.  :p

But you're right, they're not starving or in fear of their lives.

And you wonder why they want to stay?

Fistly let me say, that seeing those people in the container must have been hard.

Second. A few things that have been getting around in our media.

Uni students are protesting that all the people in the camps should be made legal. Ok, sure most of them will be made legal at some stage. My gripe is some will just go in the doll (social security) do bugger all and stuff up our aussie culture.

*allows outcry for last bit of last sentence*

Stuff up our aussie culture! i hear you say. Well sad but true yes. A bunch of towl heads banded together and took out a court order against shop owners in a large shopping complex, and basically the shop owners couldnt hang christmas decorations as they found it offensive to their culture. They didnt have the decency to talk it through in ENGLISH to the shop owners they just sent the court order. Then when the appropriate "tinted people celebration" came around they had stuff all over the show. NOW HOW IS THAT FAIR!

and its not an isolated case.

Its starting to sound like im rasist. but im not. If they want to worship their religon by all means go for it, want to talk there own lingo well thats ok. BUT dont push it on to everyone. If you want to work in our country, SPEAK ENGLISH. A good example of this was when i was working with some koreans. They spoke english to all of us during work time and they spoke korean to each other in lunch breaks. I got no problem with that, as they went with the flow when it was appropriate to do so. My problem is most of the people that move into Australia want to set up there own little sect and then scream "discrimination" when people get onto them about not speaking English when its appropriate to do so.

On the flip side. IF a heat surgeon or doctor or pressure welder, or chef wanted in to australia, then i have no worries, as they have skills to offer, skills that would benifit the community.

and you have a good point Booky, So i reckon its a case of damned if you do and damned if you dont.

SO yeah im basically having a go at a minority of them. But there the ones that get the most media time.

My appolagies to any offence taken by any one.

  12. They make stuff to counter the smell.  ;)

Ya just gotta know the right shops. Also the hydro shop sells stuff to flush thc out of ya system in 12 hrs. Although its very expensive. But good if you know you have an impending drug test.

To be quite honest. I like the hippie ideals. Just not fussed on all the hooch and nudity. They had the right ideas just went about them the wrong way. The british series "Hippies" is a prime example. Sure protest and have your say, just dont do it the way they did all the time about every minor issue. Now days Uni students are the same. They protest about stuff they dont understand just to make a point.

    Damn hippies......

Damn straight,  I think that's where all the "revolution" crap in Cyberpunk came from..

"I though the idea of Cyberpunk was that you were anti-coporation?"

"No, the idea of Cyberpunk is that you sell out to the coroporations to get cool stuff."

    -  Wilphe's sig line

Just like the hippies, if you think about it...

    We taking notes Malek.  :p

  14. a news web page has stated some of what i read in the paper at work today. Now that Saddam is a P.O.W. he is granted certain rights and status and crap so basically he may not be able to stand trial by iraq.

    Quote
Some Iraqis expressed concern that prisoner of war status, which grants Saddam certain legal rights and protection under the Geneva Conventions, could prevent Iraqi courts from trying the ousted dictator for alleged crimes against the Iraqi people.

    from that link above.

Maybe one of my crack pot conspiracy theories was right. Now all america has to do is make Saddam disapear in a nice orderly manner.

I think it was the Mars Global Surveyor or something like that.  It was some kind of surveying probe.  One set of engineers worked in miles, the other in kilometers, and they didn't notice it and covert their units.  So the thing took a nosedive straight into Mars.

Yes that was one discovery chanel gave nasa heaps over, but i remember a second probe burnt up because of a simple maths error.

I mean as far as illegals go i reckon they should have there boats turned around, or sunk.

I expected better from you Harry.  You should at least find out why they're coming before you consider turning them back.

Actually, what really disturbs me is the racist overtones that the phrase 'illegal immigrant' has.

Well booky, allow me to further clarify my point of view.

When it was exposed that these people were leaving there country because of civil unrest and all that stuff i thought ok, its not good. But when they were burning there passports and paying vast amouts of money to get onto a boat to get to australia illegally, thats what got on my goat. Now there protesting and going on hunger strikes to be made legal.

Well if there going to hunger strike let em starve. If they can afford a massively over priced ticket on a boat, then they could surely have looked into legal avenues.

Sure they might be locked up over here, but at least there not getting shot and there getting 3 meals a day, which is more than some people get.

  17. Quote (ChalkLine @ Jan. 11 2004,12:33)
I hate to say it, but the failures are often more important than the successes, as the other sciences benefit more from the drone's activities.

Yes a very valid point. I remember on discovery chanel that one of the mars probes crashed because of a maths error that a 16 year old could have picked. (to sumarise discovery chanels wording a little)

Basically it over shot its landing area and burnt up or the likes.
