  1. I hear a lot of squealing about drones this and drones that but the US has had a much bigger problem for a much longer time

A legal and historical look at militarized police in the US

the article actually meshes well with this article about Lincoln's illegal surveillance during the Civil War

    Lincoln's Surveillance State

We currently have to never ending wars, the drug war and the GWOT

Things won't get better until those are over with

  2. Hate to sound paranoid, but doesn't it seem just a tad bit suspicious that we had a whole grip of these "accidents" in a pretty rapid timeframe? Five derailments and several industrial accidents in just a few months is looking a bit janky to this kid, especially what with the pretty serious safety features trains have nowadays.

What you are experiencing is a combination of queueing theory combined with apophenia.

Incidents don't take place at regular intervals but rather they will bunch up. Apophenia compells you to try to discern a pattern in the incidents.

As for planning a drill involving backpack bombs...well that just makes sense and in hindsight we can see that DHS wasn't the only crew that thought backpacks would make great delivery devices.

Honestly though, various government agencies have to conceive of and make plans for all manner of scenarios. I recall not long ago that it was revealed that the DoD had conceived a scenario involving a"TEA Part Militia"

seizing control of the State House in North Carolina and declaring that the state was going to secede from the Union

  3. I'd like to put in my two cents worth based on some recent personal experience. After a rotator cuff tear and some other cumulative traumas all capped off with an abscessed tooth that required an emergency extraction I was unable to train for an extended period of time.

Now, all the moves were still there in the CNS and even out into the muscles but my performance when I began training TKD again were not only painful to do but painful to watch and I was warned that there was a real danger of my reinjuring myself. So I am very slowly working my way back up. Cardio isn't bad at all considering that I gained 15 pounds during the layoff and during rehab I got stronger than ever using weights and the cable systems. But that's not a skill.

Anyway, now I'm going to start training BJJ on friday nights as well :P go figure.

  4. Okay...

Tom Cotton is a backward buffoon whose worldview is informed by the superstitious rantings of Bronze Age savages.

He is not a serious person and he has a track record of saying things that it'd be a strain to consider as merely ignorant.

His intention with this provision was that the extended families of suspected offenders would all be detained in places like Guantanamo for indefinite periods of time with no hope of trial

  5. I'd have to say it far surpassed "Blackhawk Down". Not as big a scale but instead of being outnumbered by an order of magnitude they had Barefoot Operator outnumbered by an order of magnitude.

  6. Originally This article appeared on the website Police One

Beyond the fact that this incident goes to illustrate Jeff Coopers assertion that a good pistolero with a heavy duty service weapon can wreck a rifle squad I find some of the language to be provocative of thought.

If you call someone a "piece of shit" then what does that make you if said individual totally pwnzers you and your mates collective asses?

    Police: 90+ round fired~ 4 hits that didn't stop

Barefoot Grower: 38+ rounds fired ~ 6 cops downed one of which dies

I mean no disrespect but really...who came out of this looking like shit?

  7. Some perspective. A few days after the Boston bombings there was a maasive explosion in a fertilizer plant in Texas in which many more people were killed and injured.

Now the point it that at the very least the government badly dropped the ball on basic safety inspections and standards with this plant and now at least one investigation seems to imply that it wasn't just a simple matter of neglect.

My point it this. You can't go through life with a double standard that give carte blanche to the government when dealing with real or imagined terrorist while simultaneously going libertarian on matters like occupational safety.

I admit that I have no clear idea as to what balance needs to be met. However, series of large scale industrial accidents have a lot more potential to harm a lot more people than any gaggle of religious weirdos

  8. Something that floated to the top of my brain was so-called "sports entertainment" and how that would come back in your world

Way back when I was a kid "pro wrestling" was a lot different than the sort of thing that happens these days.

My ex-father in law was a perfect example of what those guys called a "mark"...he totally believed what was happening in the ring.

Now there was in fact a number of ways they managed to keep the suspension of disbelief up.

One way was the challenge. At least one of the wrestlers would be what was known as a "hooker". A guy who was an expert at submission holds. Local tough guy would get in the ring and in short order he'd be suffering from something painful that'd require his surrender.

Even further back when bare knuckles was still one of the match types you have the invention of the Battle Royale.

The BR did not resemble the Japanese novel or whatever of the same name nor did it look like the Hunger Games. It was a LOT more cynical than that.

Blacks were not permitted to compete against whites in the Old South. Rather at a stag party or smoker as a warm up to the bare knuckles match a half a dozen young black men would fight it out in the ring for a winner take all cash prize.

The rule was "Last Man Standing" and if any part of your body except the feet touched the floor you were out. The first black bare knuckles champ, Jack Johnson IIRC, made a lot of money at these when he worked out a "rope-a-dope" strategy

Personally I suspect that some modern MMA promotions have more than a few "worked" fights in among the "shoots". Worked meaning ...well...fake

Anyway take taht as you will.

  9.

Please note that I consider Glenn Beck a douche but it doesn't mean he's automatically wrong.

Glenn Beck would rather climb a tree and lie to you as stand on the ground and tell the truth. If he can use a few facts in his lies it's so much the better for him.

  10. Don't forget Eric Robert Rudolph who not only bombed the Olympic village in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics but also bombed some abortion clinics and a lesbian nighclub.

He did this motivated by the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion

Hell, maybe Westboro Baptist is stepping up their game :P

  11. I'm giving it time.

Honestly whenever folks who have some battlefield experience start speculating about things like this with nothing more to go on than the vids and pictures and news stories available I am reminded of the OKC Bombing with Timothy McVey. A retire Army General made a compelling argument that it was in fact an attack using a Soviet Katusha artillery rocket....

  12. Oh let's throw some wild cards out here.....

Anti-same sex marriage extremist...radical anti abortion activist..

Those pop to mind as people who might really pull a stunt like this

North Korea has nukes...or so they claim...why do something like this?
