  1. SC, I completely agree with you.  There is a line from "Arms and the Man" that covers my attitude on the topic:

BLUNTSCHLI. No; but it doesnt matter. I didnt ask the reason when you cried on; and I dont ask the reason now that you cry off. I'm a professional soldier: I fight when I have to, and am very glad to get out of it when I havnt to. Youre only an amateur: you think fighting's an amusement.

    The entire text is [http://eserver.org/drama/arms_and_the_man.html]here[/url].

Violence is a unplessant but nessary part of human existance (historicaly speaking).  Can anyone name a time when a war did not occur (globaly speaking).  Humans fight either to improve our possitons, defend them or for honor, and other stupid resions (like a king's birthday).

As far as I am concerned its better that the other guy ends up dead, and even better that I am never in a situation where one must do that.

  2. Depends on which old people.  I read that at some of the protests in NYC against the war surviving members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade did show up to oppose the war.  As a bit of anacdotal evidence one of my Grandfather's frends (also a career army officer) said that at his nursing home (populated completely by veterans) almost no one supported the war.

    Edited for spelling.

  3. "I don't see anything that looks like Esteban's or Jason's.  I do see lots of SEAL gear."

"Fawcett, you're right.  We need to aquire some russian guns."

Damien muses, "I wonder if its easier to buy or steal them?"  He looks for Ebin or Hanna, "how well paid and motivated are Sov oil and the Russian security forces in the area?"

OCC:  Translation: is it easier to steal them because they tend to get drunk and high or just buy the stuff from them because they are corrupt?

  4. Hanns, thanks for helping to close the SOA!  I wonder if anyone found out about it outside the grunts.

As for that bulpup, it looks very very cool and properly cyberpunk.  I hope your project works out properly.

  5. As much as Cyberpunk is my favorate game system, many of the books suffer from "Ge wiz, thats cool" syndrome.  For instance, AVs are basicaly a brick with a jet engine under it.  With the fuel state (very expensive and centeraly controled) production it doesn't make sense to have them.  Use Autogyros, they use less fuel and are just as cool.

My biggest problm with neo-tribes is that the concept is cool, but the execution doesn't let characters fit in well.  Also the problem of expensive gas and heavy vehicles rears its ugly head.

The best book is Wildside which should have been part of the Core rules.  I just happen to hate the section at the back of the book where they creat an  unworkable set of rules for currency.

Finaly, netrunning should have had its own book with a system that wasn't written by a cockroach on crack.

SOF should have instead of concentrating on weapons should have concentrated on small unit tatics (like how to clear a room or stairwell in both directions) or somthing usefull like that.

Max metal's vehicle creation system is a pain because often they don't feel right after completion.  At least its versitle.

The materials presented are good, some sourcebooks just feel like they are too munchkin intensive.  It gets me that no one produced a Chacago, Miami or NYC sourcebooks.

  6. Getting Bin Laden is wholy unconnected with Iraq.  I oppose the current American engagement in Iraq (ok so there are also 3 British Divisions and 2K Austrailian troops) is that putting the country back togeather again will be a real PITA.  I mean look at Afganistan.  The warlords in the proviances weild power, women are being forced to wear Burkas and prohibited from going to school again.  The only place where any liberation has occured is in Kabul because of the presence of International Peace Keepers.

The other problem is getting Iraq back togeather after this war.  I just can't see how the US can install a pliable pupet without needing to militarialy support him and crack down on banditry and gurella attacks.  The last time anyone tried invading Iraq (the British) got severely beaten in the Arab revolt of 1920 that they were only able to put down with poison gas and bombing viliages that didn't pay taxes.

Also every day longer that this goes on the more emboldened Islamists (like Bin Landen and the Moslem Brotherhood) and they are the real enemy.  At least Sadam is a secular despot and can be reasioned with after a fasion.

I just don't like the odds.

I support the troops but not the political leadership that makes the policy.

Oh, and one last thing, the entire cancer bit that is blamed on DU, I am more enclined to believe that the improper destruction Chemical weapons by American engerneers (which is blamed for Gulf War Syndrome) probably also is causing the spike in cancer rates.

  7. How about something even cheaper?  A tripod with 3 FOG-ATGM missles, a day/night optical sighting and detection system.  Hook it up to a few solar pannels to provide power (long term) or fuel cells (short term) and a fiber optic cable to provide controll and tellemetry data.  Or alternativley make the weapon a MMG or HMG with at least 1500 ready rounds.  Then run the cables to a well concealed comand post.  It would be cheaper and simplier than AI controled remotes that are likely to also engage frendlies.

  8. I do like useing the Methonol fuel cells, just add a bio-mechanical alcohol extractor to the implantee's stomach and have a shot of vodka every night for power.

    Alternatively a bio-fuel cell.

Either one works.  I just like Handwavium.

  9. Not being a very violent person, I can only add a few observations.

Firstly, my attitude is that I won't try to start anything and will try to defuse it, but if I actualy had to fight, I would probably resort to traditional dirty fighting.

I was in a bar district in Baltimore last night and noticed the bouncers.  A friend of a friend was essentialy a slightly fat human brick.  Perhpase 5'6" at least 180 lbs, and a bit smaller than most of the bouncers that I saw.  I don't doubt that most of them do earn their keep ejecting roudy drunks, but severely doubt that a trained opponent would have any trouble enforcing their will on these bouncers.  The bars wanted big guys with muscles that can enforce their will on the drunk and disorderly, not on trained sober opponents.

  10. Damien says, "Fawcett, thanks for finding my things."  He takes his Glock and gives it a throuhgh check over and cleaning.  The magazines disapear into his pockets.  Other items that would not have gone through customs without questions go into other pockts.

He then comments, "so this is home, at least for a while."

  11. I know that keneticaly, the damage should be 5D6, but shouldn't we push it up a little higher on the grounds that it is after all a 1/2 inch hole that it makes?

  12. It depends on where your character is and what they are doing.  For the average Nomad/Great Plains, get the aforementioned 7.62mm Bolt action rifle.  If you are going to be in a city enviroment somthing like this would be apporperate.  If you will be engaging many targets at long range, a semi-automatic rifle that fires the .300 WSM cartrege would be about right.  If you realy need to reach out and kill someone (or their APC) the 15mm would be right.

Of cource for the urban sniper, I would sugest getting rulles for suppressed firing.

  13. I'm realy impressed.  Got a question though, the TT-33 (I thought) fired a rather potent cartrege.  Same with the 7.62x54r which I thought would rate 7D6 or so.

This is an excelent list though.

  14. Just a thought:  Why not use the 4-gauge shotgun as a basis for a anti-material rifle?  Just develop a Tugsten Fletechette.  Because its a break-breach weapon, extra-long shells can be used (provided that all that protrudes is part of the flechette).

    Somthing like this:

    BFG 4:  Heavy +2 N R 4 Gauge single flechette (8D10AP) 1 1 1000M 7000 eb.

Simple breach-loading smothbore shotgun addapted to fire Tugsten Carbide Flechettes at 1150 M/Sec.  Comes with bipod and 4-12x Day/night scope with flare compensation and ranging reticule.  Weights 13 killlos.  Amunition costs 25 eb/round.

  15. I would expect that outisde of the furry crowd, most modifications will be pretty minor, stuff like cat's eyes, tweaked ears, etc, possibly the occasional tail.

I would expect that for clothing custom manufacturing will have taken off by the 2020s.  Its cheaper to have a machine that turns out clothing automaticaly to customer specs (from a pattern libary) than to maintain a massive inventory of every conseviable size.

  16. All I can say is that this gun is for the same crowd that buys hummers.  Big expensive wrist braker.  I would put the damage in the 5D6 to 5D6+3 range.  Of cource it would be pretty managable in a rifle (would do even more damage and won't break wrists).  Be aware, this is all just second hand gestimation, I have never handled a firearm.

  17. Damien says, "Since you guys probably don't want to go back to the truck, I will see if I need them first."

He asks, "anyone want to take a look at the dock?"

He Carefully begins decending to water level.  (A/N checks everwhere)

OCC:Thumper, glad to see you posting here.

  18. Concidering that the projectile is a 25mm round, that would mean that:

25/20*625=781.25 or about 781 fragments.  Even nastyier... that would mean that everyone within 1M would take around 195 fragments @ 1D6/frag...

Everyone within 2M would take 48 frags...

Now I would expect HESH to be somthing like a 4D10 or 5D10 round, more than enough to stop a truck...
