  1. I suggested handgun, rifle (SMG single shots depend on the gun type, uzi=handgun, MPK-5=rifle), automatic weapon(full bursts, maybe 3 round burst too), and multiple heavy weapons, (rocket and machine gun are somewhat different)

I think Agamemnon suggested handgun, smg (can be used as a handgun with -4) and rifle (can be used as SMG with -4)

    Do you mean these?

  2. Hollow shaft with one 9mm bullet inside?

    Munchkinism or creativity? YOU DESIDE!!!

    :D

Anyway, I like the briefcase idea. Only question is," is the shield too big?" Could you actually get that much material (and dense enough to offer SP20) into the case, and would there still be room for pares and such?

Besides, why doesn´t anyone build armored office chairs?

A lot more useful, if it´s "your turf" so to speak. And they are big enough to hide even a bigger man (I´m over 190cm, and weigh 120 kg, and just checked I would be pretty well covered (from behind) in my chair. And they rotate easily too... :)

  3. I don´t think Lasers would work. They would have to vaporize the water wouldn´t they? Or maybe thy would just lose energy too much.

On the supercavity(air bubble), I read somewhere that it can´t really turn well, maybe not at all. And since torpedoes haven´t been dumpfires since WWII, I don´t think that wouldhelp much. If I remember correctly, the supercavity was originally intended for tactical nuclear warhead delivery under water. Anti Navy nuke so to speak. That doesn´t really matter if you don´t hit exactly, the blast area is pretty big.

Some sort of mini torpedoes would propably make the best weapon. Depending on the area, mines may also be a viable option. And, for nano warfare: Nanite saboteurs!

load on nanites, that are programmed to weaken the metal/glass/plastic structures of the underwater structure, by extracting molecyles from it. Then they build more copies of themselves from the molecyles, if possible.

Soon, the underwater walls/airlocks/support structures are weakened enough, and the weight of water crushes the complex...

Ideal for terrorism in underwater glass dome (well, tourists wish to see some scenery, won´t they? ).

  4. Surprisingly, I think most (security) systems WOULD be connected to the net. As for a reason think about this:

We take your average medium sized firm. I can´t remember them ATM, but some network news 54 or whatever the smaller news corp was would be a good example.

This, my friends, is a company designed to do news. Make them, process them, share them...

That is what the they do for living after all.

So, how does security fit in? They have a contract with Arasaka, Sternmeyer, or some other security company.  (naturally, as they would only waste resources to do it themselves. Hiring pros will become cheaper)

This security company has troops on the spot, has surveillance equipment, and most likely has a remote access to the surveillance. The remote link is there for safety of their troops, increased security (if something does wrong, HQ knows about it and reinforcements can arrive) and improving the communications.

Of course, if this is done wisely, the remote access goes through Arasaka mainframe, so you have to hack that first, but that costs time and money for Arasaka. Processing power is limited. How many security contracts Aras have in Nightcity? How many sources would communicate with mainframe? What would it cost to upgrade the computers all the time?

Smaller contracts remote access propably go through net, with passwords and encryption. No expensive specific lines needed. Here´s something your players can look for easy cash. Not much, but easy.

Second, a lot safer then a terminal at the spot, would be the cable/wire running from Arasaka to client. Safer then on the spot, but not reachable from the comfort of your home.

    Third, and most important:

Consider the average company in 2020. Can you seriously imagine a company, that doesn´t have a net access? No?

EVERY single company would have somesort of access to outside world (net). And, because of that, a access from the outside world is possible. Yes, they could only need net to send bills. So they could theoretically have a single computer, hooked to the net, and would only process bills with that. Problem is, that they would benefit a lot more from a intranet(and money is the answer to all questions), so that they won´t have to type the bill three times in order to send them. Also, working in a global company needs to be able to contact people from otherside of the world, by E-mail. So most workstations get a access to mainframe. And from there, you can access other locations from intranet.

Of course, it is possible (and propably reasonable to have the physical security (guards, blast doors, cameras) on a separated intranet, but what would you need them for in this scenario? You have access to mainframe. So you can get to the company files from your home (witch would propably be the stupidest thing to do anyway: if you get traced...). If you actually want to go in there, you need to get to company security-net.

Don´t be stupid: just because people are paranoid, doesn´t mean that your average supermarket is separated system, and the server is behind turreted autoguns, security doors and a dozen FBC guards. There are easy targets too. Thing is, they usually won´t have much money in them. (hack to a supermarket mainframe. What do you get? I guess you could order food, and tell them it´s already paid. So what?

My two cents, anyone got a change?

  5. Isn´t burning hydrogen also possible?

Assuming the burning would be complete(enough oxygen), it would produce water. Is this chemical impossibility? Am I forgetting/missing something, or can one actually use hydrogen as FUEL, in a combustion engine?

  6. Quote (manu @ July 15 2002,13:46)
The main problem with hydrogen is bulk : as it's a light molecule. And the problems are made worse by it's tendancy to leak out of any container he's put inot (once again, as the smallest atom around, it's able to go thoughs holes other gazes can't). And as a gas, it's more difficult to handle than liquid fuels (you'll have to use either hogh pressure or very low tempearutre to get an efficient storage)
And solar power is interesting, but not powerful enough to be interesting : say you've get about 1 kw of power per square meter of solar panel (I think it's about the amount of energy carried by sunlight, meaning a 100% conversion).

An aircraft carrier that's 300 meters long and 50 meters wide will yeld 15 000 kw of power, around 20 000 horsepower.
Not bad, but when you compare it to the normal motive power of such a ship it's not viable.

I´m actually not so sure about the bulk. I think you can presshurize (sp) the hydrogen to a container, and it will become liquid (like liquefied petroleum gas). We calculated about it once in a chemistry class, and I think we came to conclusion that few containers (maybe 100 liters, I don´t remember anymore) would be sufficient to drive a truck around more then tank full of diesel would run it. I don´t know about the small atoms passing containers though. The solar power could be used to convert water back to ogygen and hydrogen, and presshurize them back to containers. So basicly the ship would have unlimited fuel, only thing is that it needs time and solarpower to cenvert it to usable form again.

Also, solar power, when not "loading" the fuel, would be useful to power other electronic equipment and loading batteries.

  7. Ignore those two(Aga and Bullet). They are just crazy finns.

All finns are nuts, totally nuts I tell you.

    Oh, wait a moment...

...hrm, ignore that one, let´s take it from the beginning:

So, welcome to the site, and have fun. Take a look around, and if you are interested, I suggest you get the core book for CP2020. That helps a lot. After reading it most of the discussion in here starts to make sense, sort of.

If you have anything to ask, do so. But be prepared to get multiple opinions/answers that contradict eachothers.

  8. The Storm Front is available in finland, and yes, it has those small fightersubs. Slightly on subject here (my expertice):

    1) Does the third Corp War book exist (called Aftershock I think), or is it just as "real" as cp v3 and maximum metal reprints?

2)Anyone who has the Stormfront, could you cofirm/prove false the fact that the torpedoes in the subs have technically 0% change (last I counted about 0.04% or similar propability)

of damaging other fighter subs, or other subs in general, except for the lightly armored cargo subs. Or have I missed some of the rules?

3)Considering the submersibles and their general size stated in the book, and technology advances, would it be possible to build a submersible aircraft carrier? Small carrier, capable of submerging to max 100 meters (even this may bee too much), but enough to avoid surface radar, detection, and missiles. (and ortillery, as some seem so keen on sinking ships with it ;) )

Equipped with AV:s, VTOL fighters (harrier MK2?), helicopters (good for anti submarine operations) and fighter subs (against smaller surface ships, and submarines.)

Of course, the carrier couldn´t launch the fighters/AV/helicopters while under water.

My two cents, anyone got a change?

  9. How about Militech Ronin, with a clip full of AP rounds?

Average hit still penetrates SP 34, not that it does much damage though. (and this is all from the basic rulebook)

The beauty of this is, that when the crazy gunman has shot your characters with fullauto, the munchkin doesn´t really get anything from killing him. The bullets are all used up, and the rifle itself is usually crap considering the weapons the munchkin carries. Still, the threath becomes clear.

Big guns have the problem, that they usually end up being used by munchkins themselves. So the next guns need to be even bigger.

a sonic wake right?  That and the wake is directly centered on your target!  It may not wreck the ship but it certainly would stun the crew for a while. :p

This won't be very effective on large ships : they're heavily armord, and in 2020 one can expect maby off them to be enviro-sealed too. This will prevent the schockwave to do more than wkae them up.

Heck just look at olds WWII films about naval battles (real events, not fiction) - even a close miss and explosion would not affect the crew much, unles they're on the decks and close to the explosion.

Wouldn´t the enviro-seal work for the worse, as it is broken at the point where the rod hits, and if there is a shockwave IN the ship, it will be in closed space?

Depending the hit location, I guess it could demolish the whole ship (how flammable is the ships fuel? or if it is a carrier, aviation fuel. Ammo storage would also make a mess)

  11. I haven´t had munchkin problems in a long time, atleast heavy level munckinism. Could you tell me some examples of your problems? Basicly, why you consider them munchkins, and what is it exactly that they mess the game with  (SP 500 armor? A 155mm Howitzer in their holster? Weapon handling skills á la Lucky Luke? The brain power of The Incredible Hulk? Something else?)

  12. Every once in a while, when surfing CP2020 sites, I find a link to Mockery´s(sp?) website. Thing is, none of the links work. However, I think I have once visited the site. So, does this site still exist somewhere in the vast depts of IP-addresses,  possibly by different name? Or has the creator of the site made new pages?

If anyone can share some light of corrent state of site/creator I´d appreciate it.

  13. I was wondering if that would be a good basis for personal/altered net. The basic idea is around 1980 tech, moved directly to 2ooo-something. The only thing I see as a problem is the virtual reality, and websurfing in that enviroment...

    Anyone care to comment?

considering the size of the SIMM gard (a I right ? i've no cellphone mysel, so 'im not sure of the name), i wonder where they put it

Apparently biggest problem in designing phones is where to place SIM reader(s). In future, if you wish to have multiple SIMs or USIMs in the phone, you need smaller reader(s).

I think it´s technically possible to fit the SIM in a tooth, but changing it will be a bitch. And I think the speaker can be located in the mouth too, they can filther it out from the microphone.(propably a lot easier too, as the distance between your teeth (assuming both would be installed to either upper or lower jaw.) would be constant.

I see battery as the biggest problem (maybe if they have four teeth replaced, one being the "Brains", one microphone, one speaker and one battery. Might be possible to operate as such.

  15. Actually, my way is usually a "who did it" sort of thing, where most leads point to certain person, but don´t actually leave other people out. So that when players finally figure out what happened, it all just fits to the clues. And usually the "who" is not the most likely person.

Your average TV detective series, if you wish.

  16. Whatever the answer is, it´s usually something else then big guns. Making them think is a good one, and everall pain of carrying a army supply depot along them should be another. Constant checks by police (after calling SERIOUR backup, just think about it for a second, would you stop one of your players alone?), boosters wishing to "be tough" and try to kill the biggest nastiest thing in the block (players). Or, making them waste their job oportunities as they come to 5 star restaurant with AR and a Machete (not no tie).

BTW, BaronSamedi, what ever happened with the banana peel thing? Now that I remember...

Another point on exotics. Is it just me, or is it a bad thing for edgerunners to be recognised? I mean how many bat-winged exotics with a lion's mane, a lizard tail and goat horns are there? Plus, they tend to stand out in the crowd a bit.

Well, it also depends on the circumstances, do you believe every single drunken/high-on-god-knows-what booster running from the alley screaming: "HELP! THE DRAGON IS GOING TO EAT ME!!!"

I guess pcychologically is may also be harder to identify exactly what you saw. (Big, hairy creature, with sharp teeth, could be few different kind of exotics, a big dog, or a maniac with vampires and in the need of shave.)

Also, one of my havorite tricks is to let characters assume something, give hints that point to that direction, and still keep the REAL thing in game, so that it fits to those hints...

    Jeez, man... Read some Pratchett.

I would, but both ones I haven´t read are never in the library :(

ON a side note, could anyone suggest some retro scifi?

Maybe made in the fifties or sixties, preferrably by some US writer?

  19. The dialing might be a bit hard. Do you think people who snore (like me) would call to random numbers at their sleep? :)

And who knows how lithium-ion batteries work, do they have something liquid inside them?

Oh, and one more thing: As some fear cellphones cause cancer, what would that do? is the inside of your mouth damaged more easily then your brain, as the skull isn´t protecting it? Your tongue would ne right next to the transmitter.
