Swords will not defeat any other melee weapon being used in Cyberpunk it's all based on skill and who has the range ability to attack the other first.

    Of course,

    no generalisation can be true.

But in fact I disagree a bit. Skill and situation make up for a lot, of course, but still, a sword is superior to almost every other weapon - one reason for that is simply because it is one of the very few melee weapons that are actually weapons and not modified tools or hunting devices.

It will only take a mediocre swordsmen in most of the situations to best a skilled knife-wielder in combat.

Any "but what if he stabs him from behind... what if he is too close..." and the like is no real argument, it's just for a very specific situation. In general, the person with the sword raises his chances of winning in melee by a decent amount. Of course you cannot say "always", there are tricks and tactics - but for the swordsman as well.

Swords (well, plus shields, but we had that already ;)) are truly masterpieces of weapon technology, although their design and principles are quite uncomplex. They are, by and large, the best melee weapon you can go for - considering the chance of winning a melee fight.

Other factors like concealibility matter as well, of course, but are no concern when you talk about winning the actual fight.

I just stumbled across it once and instantly fell in love with the look.

That just reminded me, Malek...  :p

    SC, it's like this.
It's simply not fair. The badguys get the best uniforms.
Like, just how good do SS uniforms look, really?
I know the stuffing is evil and all...but...y'know...they do look pretty chill.
  3. Yes, thank you, that should it be.

That was the only thing in sword design where I have to give the point to the Japanese, as a round guard is a far better. You will know when your fingers hurt ;).

  4. May I quote from one of our english books at school? There was a funny opinion reflected:

"The difference between democrats and republicans is the difference between tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum."

I certainly would disagree, but then again, I don't live in the states ;).

  5. I meant the style and substance concerning a uniform.

Who would I be to argue that "made in Germany" still stands for high reliability and quality.

And for the uniforms, I myself just think them to be what they are - just pieces of clothing. But, as I said, I do know americans that think them to be good-looking. Perhaps it's a more reasonable approach that shows that they judge them by their appearance. <shrug> You know, after all, they are just cloth. As the stars and stripes are also.

What they stand for, of course, is something different, and I doubt there are many people that find what a Nazi-uniform stands for attracting.

  6. Yeah,

just think of the Messerschmidt ME262A...

if they had churned out more standard aircraft, perhaps they would have had a better chance... actually, I doubt that the development costs so much standard-ressources that it will hurt your production significantly. It is just another kind of infrastructure.

Well, but after all, I am happy that the germans did not win WWII ;). Imagine I would be sitting here wearing an SS-uniform <shudder>.

Although I know many americans that think the Nazi uniforms to look sexy and cool... ;).

But sadly, with the Nazis, it would be folly to apply the CP rule of style over substance.

  7. You know,

all these swords lacking a decent... what's the word... Parierstange, in german...

they all want me to apply the simple, but effective "aim for the wielding hand" tactic ;).

The hand that wields the weapon is normally the nearest thing for you to reach... and trust me, only experienced sword (or staff, for that matter) fighters will know how to parry a blow that goes there without a... Parierstange.

  8. What makes the story so funny is the truth behind it ;).

The U.S. has ABC-weappons as long with the means to create, research and deploy them.

They are even willingly admitting so, so there wouldn't even be the need to send inspectors in.

After all, the argument "why are they allowed to, and we are not?" has some human reasoning behind it :).

  9. Well,

another thing that would count for umbrellas instead of canes (althought canes are potentially more effective in combat) is...

they may be a nice fashion accessoire.

And remember: style over substance ;).

As for money, do you have any idea what an artistic netrunner, with a genius IQ, a very good knowledge of the stock market, and both the programs and training to design their own cyberware can do?
Belive me they are the type of person who could theoreticaly have their own custom cyborg body.

Don't you think you need some techies to actually design and build anything that is after all hardware ;)?

strawberryu any decent umberrella has at least 2-3 inches of steel spike makes a great last ditch defensive weapon just watch teh avengers and youll see what an umberell in the hands of a skilled user can do especially if its also a sword cane

    Yes,

I totally agree with that - if I, personally, had to chose, I'd take an umbrella instead of a knife anytime.

But, a walking cane with a steel spike is still more effective when making a swing, as it can go faster... while offering the same potential for thrusts.

But then again, imagine if it starts to rain... ^^

  12. Actually,

    so far,

we never even heard about a full 'borg in any of our games so far.

In one game, we came into contact with ACPAs - but it was a rare occasion and very good because it was full of action, drama, and suspense ;).

  13. Quote (Grim @ May 02 2003,01:22)
I guess if you have nothing else, a big umbrella might do OK.

Especially for the range it offers ;).

But, well, the cloth of the umbrella wrapped around the shaft will give you a resistance when striking that you can feel, compared to a wooden cane, for instance.

  14. If you have the breath, shout as loud and as spontaneously as you can ^^.

It may frighten, irritate or surprise him - and if not, perhaps help will be on the way :p.

Now I know that's not very heroic, but, well, give it a thought ^^.

First off you are all wrong about real chainmail! :p

Read a bit more carefully ;).

I did not claim that chainmails back then were made that way, I just said that a Tachi would have a very very tough time beating a mail crafted out of interwoven rings :).

Besides, the technique to make "real" chainmals isn't that young, although I cannot date it just from my memory.

But you are right, Tachis and Tantos, and even more the "civil" swords Katana and Wakizashi, were designed to slash and hack away at unarmored or lightly armored targets - and after all, a Samurai armor wasn't something you would consider heavy. I think I told the stuff about the different purposes already in this thread ;).

Well, so in a direct comparison you should go for western armor and weapons.

What are we able to learn from that for CP...? Perhaps you should rather take a good club than some fancy Katana ;).

Or go for that Anderthalbhander ^^.

(Oh my, b@stard sword is censored...)

  16. Well that certainly is a good tactic.

But dodging a blade is VERY hard. But if you have a sword from that time... dodge.

    Or use a shield ;).

In fact, japanese blades where able to take hits at a certain angle, as the blade was, due to different cooling on different areas, a bit more flexible.

Nevertheless, to parry that way requires an insane amount of skill - and you can believe it, the general swordfighting skill was not that much better in Japan. Rather, it was different.

    Disadvantages
Bad Tempered: Does not take ewell to people bad mouthing Mother Russia. Will start a riot to get to the offender. 10 points.
Sense of Duty: Will not betray Vlad even on threat of death. 10 points.

Those are the only things I disliked about the character.

He appeared to be quite balanced, with a hang for the stereotypical, but sorry, in my party such things as quoted here would be considered as character traits and not as disadvantages - especially not as disadvantages that grant you additional points!
