A superintelligent AI in a walking, talking, immortal, nigh invincible body.

You've just described the Watcher in the Darkness (aka the Count, aka Agamemnon, aka Vlad Gregorov), who features in several of my stories.

Would an AI "want" a body? Do they "want" to live? My story (Stealing the Fire) was based on the assumption that they do, but is there any logical reason why?

An AI could pursue the betterment of itself. Does this include transcending its electronic realm?

Is a cyborg an evolutionary step - or merely transitional...perhaps even a dead end?

Thought: cybernetics are a dead end. Sooner or later, psychosis will get ya. Bioware may be a way out.

Thought: The human body cannot be made to accept something as unnatural as cybernetics, but bioware is another matter. Perhaps humanity loss can be avoided with proper precautions.

Thought: With the proper kind of manipulation, bioware modifications could be made into dominant traits in the recipient's DNA, thus creating enhancements that are passed on the one's offspring.

Thought: The human race could well split into the evolved and the mundane, and the latter could eventually be usurped as the dominant species of Earth.

Conclusion: A process of evolution, which has lots of roleplaying potential along the way. Think Gattaca.

Thought: There may or may not be evolution, but evolution can certainly be induced by Man.

Thought: There is another possible evolutionary line that concludes with the integration of Man with Machine, a machine-consciousness, a hybrid of AI and human.

Personally I wouldn't - it's perhaps a bit soon and in questionable taste.  Besides my personal interpretation of CP2020 bifurcates at the year 2000, rather than mid 80's.

Questionable taste? I do not think that the suffering of all concerned can be made worse by using the event as a piece of history in a role-playing game.

Then again, I have never been one to weep for the pains of others. Call it a character flaw if you will.

In the meantime, I'll say "Show me an Evolutionist, and I'll show you someone who has more faith in the impossible than *any* Christian *EVER*."

    Death said it best.

"Then take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder and sieve through the finest sieve and then show me one atom of justice, one molecyle of mercy. -- And yet you act as if there is some ideal order in the world, as if there is some... rightness in the universe by which it may be judged."

To me, evolution is a truth more solid than justice, but less solid than stone.

There are things that cannot be proven, cannot be shown to exist. Show me an atom of God, and I'm a believer. Of evolution there are traces and signs, if not conclusive proof.

    Of course, I'm an agnostic.

At the other extreme of the scale are those whom are never satisfied with material in the books and feel compelled to invent new and exotic equipment/abilities/classes/rules/etc for various reasons (not necessarily munching).

    Me! Me!

I've made more new guns and cybers than you can shake a stick at, most of them horribly over- or underpowered. I did it because I liked it.

Anyone here remember Information Overload and the Finnish Edition thereof? I wrote both FE's, which I would like to nominate for the winner of the Munchkin Fanboy Supplement Award.

If ya don't believe me, go check them out. Then laugh your ass off.

There the vatican made up some kind of warrior-priests and turned there swiss guard into a rather fierce peace -keeping force

Oh gods. I just had a Church Police flashback.

The Catholic Church could be anti-cybernetics. Do FBCs have a soul? Is elective prosthetic surgery a sin? Is it OK to have a Mr Studd just for the heck of it?

A thought: What if the Inquisitors are just that: church-sponsored crusaders out to rid the world of wickedness?

Even in a corporate-run and owned world, the church could be made a force to truly be reckoned with. The corps need them to provide some opium for the people and may therefore even fund them.

"Let me put it this way: I'm trying to go into flashbacks of the Inquisition of Acheron so I don't have to think about the wig any longer."

Tango? Description please. NuAfrica sounds like World Music. Am I far off on this? Symphonic Metal? Metallica at the San Fransico Symphony?

NuAfrica is pretty much synth-backed tribal-style ambientesque club stuff. Did that sentence make any sense at all? (I doubt it).

You don't know what Tango is? It is said that two nations know how to Tango, the Argentinians and the Finns. The 2020 version is pretty much the same, but with more eccentric wardrobe. Edgerunners should really feel out-of-place in a Finnish corp party. The following is a quote from a Rockerboy correspondent:

"Here's the music for the elite. Originally developed in Argentina, Tango hit it big in Finland in the late 20th century. Few things have changed, other than the costumes of the dancers, which have been transformed into all sorts of bizarre designs often trying the borders of good taste and decency. Hell, the common streetpunk could get a hardon just by watching a couple get it on on the dance floor. I know I did."

Symphonic Metal is close to Apocalyptica (a Finnish group who became famous by playing Metallica with four cellos). Do a search on your Napster-equivalent (I recommend Path 2, as it's a cool song). The name is actually somewhat misleading, as the music ranges the full scope from rock to speed metal, all with at least a few violins and often a whole orchestra.

Curiously, music is the only part of Ultima Thule that is almost finished.

You don't have to look like Adonis to carry yourself like a God.  And you know the old hackneyed phrase told to angsty adolescents.

    "Chicks dig confidence."

Like most phrases told to angsty adolescents, it's not true. "A lie made to keep one sane." Any connections with reality are circumstantial.

Trust me, I've been there. Heck, I'm still there, with no hope of getting out.

  9. I also made up some new styles of music for Ultima Thule, the most strange being CyberBeat, which is partially sub- and ultrasonic.

Oh yeah, I also had Tango. I decided the corporates needed something to do in their official Saturday night parties.

IIRC (my Word is corrupted by a virus), UT also detailed NuAfrica, Symphonic Metal and the horrible abomination called 133+ 6347. I'll leave you to figure that one out...

  10. I thought someone once mentioned something on the concept of sword canes in cyberpunk. Basically, they are anachronistic and downright suspicious. The same would apply to pistol canes. Unless, of course the user has a high W&S to make it look really stylish.

  11. All in all, there are some pretty twisted people out there. I've heard there are those who would like to have elective prosthetic surgery.

Now, it's hopefully safe to assume that this kind of people will remain on a fringe, unlike in Cyberpunk where they can walk into you in every street corner. A certain amount of exaggeration makes cyberpunk a more interesting genre. Without it, the game would probably be less fun.

I once played a Dragon exotic. You can bet your hiney he was no prostitute. ;-)  My GM gave him a +4 mod to Intimidation in most cases. People were more likely to spill their guts when coming across a 7-foot walking lizard.

As for Clinton, I might have overcooked the praise a bit, but he still managed to come across a lot smarter than Bush, who quite frankly is a complete moron. The man's a cowboy not fit to run a 7-11. Where's another John Wilkes Booth when your country needs him?

I remember reading that GW Bush caused a drop in the value of the yen when he mistakenly spoke of devalvation when deflation would have been the correct term.

And don't even get me started about the pretzel... ;-)

Seriously, if I had to choose, I'd rather see BillC back in the Or... sorry, Oval Office. Him I could respect, on some level. Buch on the other hand comes across as being a total airhead.

Has anyone ever thought about creating a character that would be like you? Seriously, take all the skill, deside what YOU can do (you, not your character), estimate stats(your own), and then make "yourself" into the game? Would you live through the first session? Would you feel heavy loss if the character died?

Umm... Me as a character. I'd probably be a Techie/Netrunner type guy.

As a matter of fact, I once made up stats for myself. All I really had was a bunch of INT skills, most of them "really useful" stuff like Expert: Magic the Gathering and Expert: Myths and Legends.

To answer your question, I would definitely not survive the first session. Not with my Cool 3 and all...

Only thing I care to nag about is that you type too slow. :)
Now get going with the next chapter!!!!

Just out of curiosity, do you type all the fiction yourself, or do you take other peoples stories at your site too? Who knows, I might feel like writing something. (not a promise, but I have been thinking if I should give writing a shot)

Kyllähän sitä muuten, mutta kun noi perhanan yo-kirjoitukset... Work is underway, and the next chapter should come out by the 26th (i.e. after Exam Hell). Stay tuned...

Yes, I do accept submissions, in fact, they are more than welcome.

P.S. Stop thinking of IBM, Intel, or GMC when you think of "Mega-Corp".  If you need to see how things are done in CP 2020, scope 'The Outfit' from the movie "Payback" with Mel Gibson.  Great CP-style story if nothing else.

I loved that flick. It had the true CP feel, even though it's set in the world of today.

Arasaka is the ultimate baddie. The fact that they were all but eliminated in Shockwave does not bode well for CP203x (few things do, in fact).

what about the Colt Mauser ? my char has one with ETE (taken from a prokiller that finished a friend-we were never suppossed to get him... ) but even without it its a good gun ,
not as much range as the antimattergun but the APability more than makes up for that ,its not as big and clumsy .

The M2X is probably my all-time favorite weapon. One of my characters tried to shoot down three AV-3s with it. By some miracle, he got the first one.

It was a pity he didn't run for cover instead. If he had, he'd still be alive...
