  1. For the high-tech terrorist, there's a way easier option : surgery.

Replace most fat tissue (and some extra chunks for a reasonably chubby look) with some kind of explosive gel

Fit he denotators disguised as some kind on legit implant (sensor wires for and advanced biomonitor or the like)

Link the detonator to a neural processor for the perfect 'think a boom' trigger.

Very difficult to detect and quite effective (you can easily pack 10 kg of explosive that way). Of course it's less fun, but far more cost-effective if you want to down an airliner.

Of course there's the even cheaper 'suicidal loony with a SAM near the airport' route for the really cash-strapped.

  2. If he's prone to run at max speed to engage ennemies (or run away from them), odds are he'll get jonown for it. So use his speed against him :

    * pull a monowire string bewteen the walls of that dark alley, neck-heigth, and taunt him into 'coming and getting it'.

    * drop some slip spray ona roadcorner next to something unpleasant (toxic was pool, road underpass..)

  3. Okay, my suggestion for a 'miss that called shot'

head shot : miss by 1 or 2, hit the chest

hand/foot : miss by one hits the arm, otherwise it's out

arm/leg : miss by one, hit the chest/abdomen, miss by 2 hits abdomen/chest

(note ; location 2,3 for chest, 4 for abdomen - obviously the more you miss the farther you go)

'earth aim' or other specfic torso location such as that incendiary grenade stitched on the combat webbing or the like) : miss by 1 or 2 hits the chest

Quick qnd dirty system but gets a bit more reward for called shots since a near miss means you're still hitting something that might hurt.

  4. And once burned out, napalm leaves relativey little pollution - and in a form far safer than unexploded bomblets.

It also make sense to use it on diseased peoples, since you got an instant funeral pyre to get rid of the infection.

Of course it's politically sensitive stuff, napalm bombing isn't know as a attractiv to the voters. But it might have been a deliberat move from the corporations, to rub the council's nose into who's the new boss (ohwell, and the poipulace's nose too).

    Shock and awe in action...

  5. Well here's how (as a GM) i would have handled the thing :

    * first bunch of cops get caugh unaware and iced (say one response squad or the like)

    * second bunch takes cover behind anything strong enough and lay covering fire while calling C-SWAT

    * a few minutes later, the C-SWAT's AV-6, considering nobody in the armored truck can have survived to such a bunch of overgunned and overtestoteroned maniacs shoots a AT-missile of some sort in the truck, then slices away what's still moving with the 20mm.

Then the aleady debarked C-SWAT team comes to inspect the mess - but probably woth a few heay snipers (Arasaka light 20, Barret's or the like) half a mile away as cover.

Either the PCS bugged out soon enough or they get trashed.

I'm now going to ask where people draw the line between "Rifle" and "Heavy Weapons"...

I tend to use two benchmarks

caliber : if it's a riffle/machinegun type ammo, womehting that's bigger than 7.62 will almost inevitably go to the heavy weapon class. If it fires grenades, heavy weapons too.

Stance of the firer : if it's fired with a bipod, tripod, pintle mount or the like, it's an heavy weapon. If it's shouldered and aimed riffle-style, go for riffle.

Some oddities don't fit and are decided on a case-by-case basis, fo instace a gonk in a linear frame can probably use stuff like a riffle that normal peoples can't. There it's a case-by-case guesstimated decision.

  7. A 45-rounds belt won't do much to the gun, it's only 1,5x the original magaine capacity.

But firing something that's on a tripod definitively clases as heavy weapons, not riffle - the stance and aiming are widely diffrent from shouldering a riffle.

Some acurrizing (the original FN-RAL is such a crap it should not be that hard to improve on it) and packing an extended magazine whould to the trick.

Note on API : using API ammo for sustained fire don't sounds like such a great idea. Unless you're using machingun ammo, the sustained firing of such touchy items is likely to end up in a coockoff. And with caseless ammo, this tends to end up with half the magazine blowing in your hands. Ouch.

  10. The latest development in the torpedoes department is whta can be called 'submarine missiles'

Basically you propell the torpedo with a rocket motor, and some of the gazes are flowed to the tip of the torpedo, caoting it with gaz bubbles and greatly reducing drag. So your torpedo can reach speeds in the 250-300 mph range. Maneoveurability and range suffer, but if you've a good target location, there's not much it can do to get out of harm's way.

The drawback, appart from the range and manoeuver problems is that rocket fuel is a touchy stuff. A safer way to handle the thing could be to use a two-stage torpedo : conventionnal, wire or sonar-guided first stage to get close, then aim and shoot the missile-like second stage.

  11. Viewing is not the whole picture, you'll need molecule-scale tools to sort out the molecule-sized elements and play around with them.

That would be even more difficult to get by than the viewing tools. So precious few street-types could do it.

On the other hand, a connected enough fiwer could probably use a front society to buy several hundred meters of the stuff 'for security purposes'

  12. some examples for the 'd100' rule :

say the PCs are trying to convince some grunt to let them in

100 - fat gobs of luck : one of the PCs happen to know that guy in friendly terms - no problem (unless they're dressed to kill) or the guy is busy enough ripping some eldelrly lady's puppy from his leg to give them very little attention

75 - favorable conditons : the guy is endig is shift and don't care much

50 - average : no special benefits nor hindrances, the guy is a regular joe

25 - not good : he finished dealing with the above-mentioned puppy, he's quite pissed and vent some of it on the PCs (time to be really nice with the guard...)

01 - eye-deep in brown stuff : the guy is mean, half paranoïd, and as soon as he spots the PCs he calls for backup. If they piss him enough, he and his pals might want them to do the Rodney.

Some PCs want to break in a store for cash

100 : almost nil in security, and the guy just made a good cash sale that's still in the drawer

75 : light security (one basic goon wtih a 12-gauge) and decent cash

50 : security proportioned to the cash - if they want many, it's going to be a problem

25 : unfortunately th owner is a former south Am vet, ans he's packing an assault riffle under the (armored) desk.

00 : same as above, but the place a mob money laundery (they're going to be pissed) or under police surveillance.

  13. Basic trick of GMing - don't let your dices dictate. If you don't like their result, don't mind changing it if you think it will make for a better game.

Don't let PCs die simply because of a bad roll, unless they put themselves knowingly into a situation where any botch means getting iced.

Basic trick for unprepared events (don't worry, there will be some, no matter how much you prepare things. A players team means several brains to pull surprises out and you can't compete with your lone brain).

Just roll 1d100 - the higher the roll, the more things truns favorable for the PCs. It works great to quickly decide if fate is nice or mean.

  14. A turbine isn't very peculiar about it's fuel - as long as it's combustible and can be sprayed thin enough to burn adequately, it should work.

So one can probably design a CHOOH-fueled turbine, even if it's less powerful than anb Avgas powered one (or more fuel-hungry for the same power output). The turbine will be CHOOH-only, but coulf work.

Modern-day example : isn't the M1-A1 running somthing close to diesel though it's turbines ? the standard military fuel can be used into civilian diesel engines, so the reverse can probably be true.

  15. The most stupid death I witnessed : a player managed to get his character drowned in the Arizona desert...

In a village freshly 'cleaned' by corporate goons, he decided to hide from a comback of the goons the the well.

He survived his 60-feets fall, and was not spotted. But he feared to be sucked by the well's pump (yah right, a water pump feeing an inch-thick pipe, real risk..), and being unable to climb his way out, he tried to swim it out, looking for underground water channels. He found some, but get lost in the darkness and drowned like an idiot...

  16. suggestions for  your fortfifed building in the 'zone : check out for info about Beyrouth if you want tips about making a bulding survivable (i've not said comfortable) in a serviceless combat zone.

    Some tricks i've found :

    * to start with ,you'd better pick a building with a concrete structure, htey can take far more abuse than masonnery, and don't croaks off when burning like steel

    * make your building RPG proof : line all outer walls with a row of steel barrels filled with dirt and rubbles, then line them with a cinderblock wall (not the hollow kind). Just make sure to get them celiing-high and don't forget doing it at all floor to take the weight.

    * if you fear mortar shells or maybe even bombing, put steel beams right under your ceilings to take the weight of falling parts, and don't live on the upper floor (just lay a yard-thick layer of sandbags on it). sandbagging the roof too won't hurt.

note about firing ports : best made with a thick plywood V-shaped box (1/2 foot x 1/2 foot on your side, 1-foot x 2-3 feets on the outer side). Put a thick steeel shutter wit ha small viewing port on your side, this will let you look out without risking a lucky shot sneaking in.

Buying will also incur a 10% to 20% of purchase price per annum maintenance load unless they want to let the place fall apart around them.

    Sounds abit high for me - I've a flat worth about 65 000 euros - 70 000 dollars - and don't pays 6500 as maintenance fee.

A more nomral figure would be in the 5% range.

Well before we get that... seriously lighter body armour, APCs like the M113 Gavin surviving 125mm HEAT shells!  (It'll shake things up inside but it'll be intact) and Mile high skyscrapers will be possible! (or just make your regular 50 story buildings insanely cheap to build)  Your 'supercities' and arcologies will be built from this stuff.

Question.  Since these nanotubes are so small and so strong, are they biodegradable?  How do you dispose of objects (or buildings for that matter) that are almost chemically inert, nanoscopic (and thus even harder to scoop up), and insanely strong?  Will we just be creating something that can potentially produce a polution that will NEVER go away?  (Even radiation becomes tollerable after a couple hundred thousand years)

Things will vary with the cost of the nanotubes - the know-how and and license fees for the material will proably make it not that much interesting for refular builgind. Steel and slightly improved concrete will still rule.

I don't know how the carbon tubes will fare vs the the thermal effects of an HEAT charge, though it could be used as and uderlayer for ceramic tiles, and with basic metal hull to absorb the kinetic energy spread by the high-tech materials. (sidenote : if you happen to lurk on tanknet forum, don't use the M-113 Gavin designation if you don't want to be laughted at. It's apparently an unofficial designation from a M-113-loving former Us army guy, who considers it to be THE ultimate fighting vehicle, suitable for all situations)

Since they're chemically inert and large enough not to go that deep into the lungs, there won't be much of a pollution. They will be quite harmless for the environment.

  19. This sounds a bit high as a bonus for me - as well as packing just another techical skill to techies who don't need yet another skill to dump points into.

I'd rather use a straight modifier for favorable conditions/good equipment and such :

    * good equipment : +2

    * techscanner : + 2 (the thing has all the probes, databases and diagnoqtic software required)

    * cyberlink bonus : +2

    net total : +6

  20. Autoinjector and biomonitor - linked together these can be a real lifesaver.

note to Joe Q : even worse, drugs and wired refs - if you don't explode, you're superman (at least for a while, who cares if you break down once the fight is over...)

neural processor : without it tons of stuff can't work, and you can link it to most cyberware for a better control

  21. Quote
you codul leavce tehd oor slightly ajar and ba;lance a glass jar with grenadecwith the pin remioved and a load of chooh2 atop the door that way even if they manage to kick the grenade away the blast wave might set there legs on fire.

An improved version used in Lebanon by some faction to trap an hallway :

    * a block of C-4 for inititial explosion

    * a full jerrycan of gasoline

    * sandwiched in between, an incendiary grenade

whatever ignition system you can think of - the C-4 breaks the grenade and propells the gasoline into their face, the phosphorus from the grenade ignites the gasoline....

Then imagine that going off into a hallway (of course once you're 10 meters in)... Truly nasty not matter how low-tech.
