  1. Maybe future is not this amazing playground (technical wiz-bang-sex-drug-fest) but something sober and darker. The book has a lot of references to 9/11, so obviuslly it couldnt be a happy book, maybe the next one has a lighter mood.

The future, or better saying, the cyberpunk future is today. Gibson can create a plot as complicaded as old ones, with todays tecnology, and the whole movie distribution, thats very profound essue. Im starting to read as mama anarchi would. Quite disturbing.

Haha. But who is "mama" after all... some NSA lacky, or russian mobster, or corporate hack? Who's to say in today's "future"?

I think the 9/11 thread allowed for the protag (kacee) to go to a deeper level of detachment that played into the over bearing theme of isolation and brand-influenced actions.

Gibson said that he "squints at the present" to see possible "future" todays. Hey, I heard this new pop star - "Kyoko Data" is really good... have you heard that too? ;)

  2. When even Gibson has forsaken cyberpunk, then one knows that its time is over.

Or.... when Gibson works cyberpunk into a realistic portrayal of contemporary culture... maybe the paradiym has shifted.

We are living in the future.

I read the book and was struck more by the somber and melancholy mood than the technical wiz-bang-sex-drug-fest of his earlier works, an insightful reflection on our current techno-reality maybe?
