Sometimes let the dice tell the story, but sometimes tell the story your own way, no matter what the dice say.

As several other people have said, if the dice roll seems to be going against the way you want the campaign to run (ie- the entire party is killed in the first round of combat), you might think about ignoring the rolls and playing off the cuff, However, continue to roll, and make the players think that you are abiding by the dice.

One group that I used to play in had a guy that was the Master of wierd suicides...I call them suicides because his decisions were so stupid that they had to be...

His nickname was "Mr. Fifty feet of rope." He offered to jump between two buildings that were 50M apart, with...<you guessed it>...fifty feet of rope TIED around his waist. He ended up going splat....

Another time he died after leaving his genitallia draped around the top of a street sign (trying to fight a street gang...I believe that itwas twelve to one).

Anyway, anytime that he played, we had another interesting, funny and unbeliievable story to tell of his stupidity....

I think that anything with a rolling code SHOULD give you enough time to do whatever you need to do. And if you need to keep in long-range contact, the easiest way would be satellite burst...the equipment in the lab should be sufficient to build a transceiver.
