Scop And Slop

Recommended Posts

"SCOP and Slop" is the commercial end of a food lab, producing bulk food from cheap ingredients - most of what they sell is genetically modified fungus and SCOP ( Single Cell Organic Proteins ) though they also buy meat and vegetables fro local farmers, and take in truckloads of fresh food from semi-local farms, including some of the off-shore fish farms. Located near the edge of an industrial area, the building is almost aggressively nondescript - a beige rectangle with large air conditioners on the roof, a small "SCOPAS" sign in front of the office door.

SCOPAS only sells bulk - if you aren't buying a quarter ton or more, they're not interested in your business. Each morning before dawn, street vendors line up for the day's supplies, an unruly pack of small trucks and hand carts bustling in the loading dock. Later morning traffic is mostly the supply trucks for restaurants, and evenings are the incoming trucks of farm goods - and other, less food-like substances (paper waste, wood chips, etc) that wind up as filler. The factory runs three shifts of production, mostly Hispanic workers, and is on a bus line - very little parking is available, and most of the spaces are reserved for managers. Each shift is about 80 workers and a half a dozen managers. The office employs a dozen admins, and the lab has its own staff of 20 people. Security is provided by a small rent-a-cop agency, which has 3-5 guards on hand at any time - flak vests and sidearms only, this is not a high security installation.

The building - the front is a standard office, with the lab behind it. The rest of the building is 20,000 square feet of SCOP tanks and industrial food processing equipment, with yellow sodium lighting casting stark, jaundiced light over the crowded factory. It smells strongly of yeast, with rich overtones of cheese and rot. One corner of the building is refrigerated, where all the meat and fish are processed. The whole building is heavily air conditioned, though the bakery and the long row of friolators are still sweltering hot.

SCOPAS has its share of secrets - Biotechnica is in "negotiations" with them (AKA, they're blackmailing several of the managers while gearing up for a hostile takeover), for one. For another - many of the "meats" that pass through the building aren't beef, chicken, or pork - there's a reason why SCOPAS is able to sell their products so cheaply.

Adventure tie-ins - Biotechnica is looking for ways to make SCOPAS cheaper to acquire, and will pay handsomely for intel on executives. Medias would love to expose what actually goes into those dim sum. Those food vendor carts go everywhere - including secure areas, where they're inspected but not searched (usually).

Slop is slang for food - generally, institutional food. It's derived from slop as the name for feeding pigs. Bad quality is implied.

It'll wind up in one of my future games, I haven't used it yet. At this point, two of my players are traveling, and the third has moved to Texas - so my game is on hold for a few weeks, then it'll be a Skype game for one player.
